Among the more important works in W.A. Mozart’s chamber music, specifically his oeuvre for quartets, are his flute quartets. Especially when compared to the considerably smaller output of other woodwind quartets, their number refutes the theory of Mozart’s poor affinity with the flute. Of course, chance and financial considerations played their role as well. Once again, the theme and its variations grant each of the individual players a solo spot, while the minuet and trio seem to stem from a divertimento or a serenade. The closing rondo is a jewel of structure and well-balanced voice distribution.
