A Russian prince
He knew that he would die young: his friend Svetlana said that this was the Leitmotiv of Yuri Egorov’s life. She had met the young Russian pianist from Kazan during the 1975 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, during which time he had told her that he would prefer to stay in the West because he could be himself here. Svetlana displays a bundle of letters in which he later openly wrote about his homosexuality and his experiences in Amsterdam. He missed his family and, not wanting to put them in danger, returned to Russia.

"Autumn, our poor garden is all falling down, The yellowed leaves are flying in the wind." (Alexei Tolstoy)

It was once said that Yuri Egorov was like a historical prince, with his good and bad points visible to all. He was shunned by the Concertgebouw Orchestra after having turned up late for a rehearsal. He smoked marijuana, drank and participated fully in the Amsterdam scene during the 1980s. He also, however, possessed charm, integrity and sovereignty.

Yuri Egorov was just 33 when he died from meningitis on 18 April 1988. He had been scheduled to perform Ravel’s Piano Concerto with the Concertgebouw Orchestra the following month.
